SpesStory :2
Mold - Manchester

After introducing a drum machine in Nick's absence we had started seriously flirting with electronics and this along with an unhealthy interest in "alternative" lifestyles and the pursuit of a career in the art world caused Haggis to drift away taking Nick and leaving Mathew and Ed with each other for company, a recipe for disaster as neither are particularly good company! Charlie was something of a newcomer to the Mold scene having been in exile at Chandu Hall, Shropshire during his formative years returning to Mold for the joys of Mold Alun's Sixth Form. He was inexplicably interested in playing with the band so we started schooling him in the art of ham-fisted guitar and keyboard playing, smoothly integrating him into the precision unit that was Spess.

It was becoming clear that some real musical input would not go amiss and so we poached the slim but gifted Huw Jones from an anonymous Deeside art rock combo where he was "bored". It is widely believed that Huw did not have a traditional childhood, instead he was hatched from an egg fully formed and aged thirteen. (This has never been substantiated.)

A period of frenzied activity followed with three whole gigs in 1985 and Mathew writing many classic songs including "Another New Iceland" and "Sean & Joanne", (later reworked as "Descending Together" and now known as "If I can't have you I'll have somebody else" or "IICHY IHSE" for short.) There were more radio appearances and continued interest from the local press which all contributed to a rather inflated view of our own worth. You have to ask if perhaps you're not taking things a little too seriously when you get stopped by the police and have to confess that the reason you were trespassing in a disused quarry was that you were trying to take some publicity shots for your group!
